How To Fix Internet Connection:Upgrade Router's Firmware

        Firmware is embedded software inside a router. Both wired router and wireless router contains firmware. Router manufacturers usually install the upgraded firmware in it. But later, it is home users responsibility to upgrade it further if required. Upgrading firmware can increase the  performance,   security, and reliability. Using the obsolete version of firmware can result in Internet issues. Updating a router’s firmware can repair a faulty internet connection.

    If the router performance is listless, turning off unexpectedly, and experiencing dropped connections, then upgrading firmware can fix the problem. Always make sure to keep updated version of firmware in the router. In order to do this, keep checking the manufacturer’s website occasionally for any new firmware upgrade availability.

There are certain things that need urgent attention before upgrading router’s firmware.

Verify hardware version of your router for the firmware version correctly because wrong firmware upgrade may damage your router.

Make sure not to turn off the power during upgrade. Loss of power during the upgrade process may damage the device.

Never upgrade the firmware through wireless connection unless the device only has a wireless connection.

All the internet applications that run on the computer should be stopped.

Always use WinZIP or WinRAR to extract the upgraded file that is downloaded from the manufacturer’s website before upgrading.

Internet Explorer is recommended to upgrade the firmware.

Here is the procedure to upgrade Router’s Firmware: here upgrade of firmware is for TP-LINK router.

Download firmware to your computer.

            Before upgrading the firmware it is mandatory to download the updated firmware software/application to your system. 

            To do this, check the model number and version of the router. (Usually router’s model number and version will be available at the back of the router device on the company provided barcode sticker)

Download the firmware from the vendor’s website, Always use WinZIP or WinRAR to extract the upgraded file.

If you are using a TP-LINK router you can follow these steps to download the firmware.

Visit the vendor’s official website here. Click on the support > download center.

Choose Home and Wi-Fi router from the drop-down menus and Click on Go. From the list of Wi-Fi Router’s Model Numbers displayed, Click on your Router’s Model Number

Next select the Router’s Hardware version from the drop down menus and click on the Firmware button.

The latest firmware version will be at the top of the list of firmware’s available and click on the link and save it as a WinZIP or WinRAR to your system.

Then use unzip tools such as WinZIP or WinRAR to extract the firmware file to a folder.   

Upgrading the firmware:

Open the Web Browser, Type IP address or Router’s URL in the address bar of the browser. Login to the router with the username and password (Usually username and password will be available at the back of the router).

Before upgrading the firmware, all the configuration setting should be saved/backup to your local computer.

On the Navigation Pane, under system tools click on the Backup and Restore.

Click on the Backup button. This will back up or save the configuration setting to your computer.

From Navigation pane, click on the system tools > firmware upgrade.

Click on the Choose file to select the path name where you have saved the downloaded file on the computer into the File name field.Click on the Upgrade button.

The device will reboot after the upgrading process has finished please wait about 3 minutes.  This router restarts automatically when the upgrade is complete. 

All your setting including Username and Password will set to defaults.
Again, Login to the router with the username and password (Usually username and password will be available at the back of the router).

Click on the status bar to check if the router’s firmware has been upgraded.

It is recommended to reset the device to factory defaults to make sure that the new usage takes effect by click system tools> factory defaults, click on the restore button.

After the factory defaults, please reconfigure the router from scratch or restore the settings from the saved backup file.
