 What is Jio?

As per Mukesh D.Ambani, Chairman and Managing Director of Reliance, Jio means Life. There is nothing more precious in the world for the rich or the poor than life. Life cannot survive without oxygen. Data is the oxygen of Digital Life. Jio respects Life, which is why reliance created Jio. Its commitment is to enrich the life of every Indian. Jio means TO LIVE and BEALIVE. The world’s demand for Digital Oxygen, that is data, is growing explosively.  How is Jio different from other networks?

The biggest difference between Jio and other networks is the optical fibre network. An Optical fibre is a wire that converts your data signal into light and transfers them at the speed of light. Reliance Jio has the longest fibre optic network in the country, ranging over 2.5 lakh km of fibre.

Reliance Jio invested 1,50,000 crores ($22 billion) into the fibre optic network. This is more than two times the combined investment of its biggest competitors like Airtel, Idea, and Vodafone in the 4G segment. All the other networks in India are made for offering voice as their main business. They use 2G and 3G spectrum bands for voice calls and 4G bands for data. But Reliance Network Jio, is completely different from that it uses 4G bands for both data and voice.

Jio is an IP-based network. This is India’s first IP Network. No other network in India is not of this kind. With this, it is easy for Jio to offer free voice calls. This is technically called “data voice call”. Jio uses VoLTE(voice over Long-Term Evolution) for offering free voice calls. This works only on phones that support 4G. 4G is designed for high-speed data transfer and it cannot handle normal mobile calls.  To solve this issue other networks shift to 3G/2G whenever a call is made. Since Jio does not support 2G/3G, they send calls as data through 4G itself.

Reliance Jio used the latest technology in its network towers, fibre optics, network devices to support 4G effectively. They can even support 5G or 6G as well.
