All You Need To Know About New Rs.500 and Rs.2000 Banknotes

The Reserve Bank of India is going to issue new design currency notes in the denominations of Rs.500 and Rs.2000 as a part of Mahatma Gandhi new series. All you need to know about new Rs.500 and Rs.2000 banknotes is, these new banknotes are completely different from the existing banknotes in terms of design, color, geometric pattern, size, theme, and location of security features.

This decision has been taken by RBI on the eve of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s step to tackle the menace of black money in the country. Narendra Modi unexpectedly took a bold decision to withdraw the existing Rs.500 and Rs.1000 rupees notes effective from the midnight of 8th November 2016. He said that such notes will become “mere papers” after this date.


The Reserve Bank of India will issue new notes for Rs.500 and Rs.2000 and these notes will be limited with the higher value as per PM Modi’s media address.

Here is what you need to know about new Rs.500 and Rs.2000. notes.

Features of new Rs.2000 notes:

Beside the basic colour of the note magenta, it also includes the motif of the Mangalyaan on the Back side, depicting the countries first venture in interplanetary space.

1. Ashoka Pillar emblem on the right.
2. Mahatma Gandhi portrait and electrotype (2000) watermarks.
3. Number Panel with numerals growing from small to big on the top left side and bottom right side.
4. Guarantee Clause on the top, Governor’s signature with Promise Clause in the middle and RBI emblem toward down right.
5. Security thread with inscription ‘Bharat’, ‘RBI’ and ‘2000’. This security thread color change from Green to Blue when note is tilted.
6. Micro letter RBI and 2000.
7. Portrait of Mahatma Gandhi in the center.
8. Denominational Numeral 2000 in Devanagari.
9. Latent image with denominational numeral 2000 which can be seen at 45 degree angle to the eye level.
10. When you look through the register, denominational numeral 2000 can be seen when note is held against light.

  The dimentions of the banknote will be 66 mm X 166 mm.


The Features of New Rs.500 banknotes:

The features of new Rs.500 banknotes are different from the present notes. The new Rs.500 differs in colour, size, theme, design elements and location of security features. The colour of notes is stone grey.

  The dimensions of the banknote will be 63 mm X 150 mm.



All the old Rs.500 and Rs.1000 leftover notes can be exchanged for value at any of 19 offices of RBI or at any of the bank branches or at any head post offices or Sub-post offices. You will get value for the entire volume of your notes tendered. However you will get up to Rs.4000 per person in cash, rest will be credited in bank account. If you don’t have bank account, it is time open one up with proper documents.
