           Block any website to restrict its access further. There may be several reasons to block a certain website on your computer. The reasons may be some websites contain explicit content, spreading the virus or trying to steal your personal data. Though these websites can be avoided by you, but the persons who access your device doesn’t stand out true in accessing such websites. So, blocking certain websites can be the true remedy.

How to block a website is not a single option available to restrict its further access. But, there are several options available to go about blocking websites. These options include blocking a website on a router, Block a website using Family safety, block a Website using command prompt, blocking a Website using external software, and blocking a website in a browser (Chrome, Firefox, and Internet Explorer). You can consider the one that best works for your needs.


Blocking websites on the router can prevent any person from accessing a page (e.g. YouTube) from the computer, as well as any cell phone or tablet connected to your home network.

Blocking websites using a family safety can only block the website on one computer. But, any other computer, phone, or tablet connected to your home network can have access to the sites you blocked.

Procedure to block a website in windows:

            Blocking any website in windows can restrict that computer from access to the blocked sites. But all the other computers, phones, tablets connected to the home network can have access to the sites that are blocked.

            This trick can block some websites from opening on your computer.

1. Press (Windows + R) key. Type this %windir%\system32\drivers\etc in the empty field of opened RUN command. Click OK or press Enter.

2. Double click on the hosts and choose Notepad when Windows prompts you to choose a program. Click OK.

If you don’t get a prompt, or if the hosts file opens in another program, Open Notepad from start menu by typing notepad or open Notepad (Start > All Programs > Accessories > Notepad) and then in notepad menu bar click File Open and navigate to C:\Windows\System32\drivers\ etc. choose all files and click Open.

3. The host's file tells the system about its action when specific domains or IP Address are accessed. This is the file that you have to edit.

4. In the Notepad, you can figure out the last line with 127.0.0.1 localhost and ::1 localhost. Place the cursor at the end of the last line, and Press Enter to create a new line. Type 127.0.0.1, press the spacebar once and then type the address of a website you want to block.

For Example, to block YouTube, Type 127.0.0.1 www.youtube.com on this line.

5. Repeat the same process to add the websites you wish to block, each prefaced with 127.0.0.1 space address of the website. Like this, you can add as many sites as you want this way, but remember you can only add one per line.

Note: Do not alter any other text in Notepad.
6. Click File > Save. Click save, in the save as pop-up window. Do not change the name or save location and ignore any warnings regarding editing the host's file. Close Notepad when finished.

Close any open browser windows, and Reboot your computer for the changes to take effect.

Try opening the site you have listed to block. These blocked sites will not open in your browser.

To Unblock, remove the above line for the Notepad and click save.

Block a website using software, can be other option to block any website, only blocks the website on one computer. Any other computer, phone, or tablet connected to your home network can still access the site blocked.



You can also block a website using the browser. But, blocking a site in a browser can block the site in one browser. Any other browser on the computer, as well as any computer, phone, or tablet connected to your home network, will still be able to access the site you’re blocking.
